Why KiKa
My son is 11 years old and crazy about football. Sometimes, when I see him playing, my thoughts wander...
A little over 20 years ago, I was the leader of a youth football team. One of the boys in that team was Stef. Stef was a good, enthusiastic football player who enjoyed being part of the team. Midway through the season, Stef started experiencing pain in his knee.
What initially seemed like an injury, quickly turned out to be much more serious. The pain in his knee was not ordinary; it was cancer. It was heartbreaking to witness how Stef and his family faced this terrible news. Stef bravely fought against the disease, but despite all efforts, he lost the battle...
I can't help Stef anymore, but now I want to contribute in my own way to the struggle of children and parents going through the same. By participating in the marathon in Cape Town for KiKa, I aim to gather financial support for children bravely fighting against cancer. It's my way of honoring Stef's memory while supporting KiKa's mission.
Will you join me? Together, we can make a positive difference in the lives of these children and their families. Let's keep hope alive and contribute to KiKa's mission together.
Research on Childhood Cancer
Annually, nearly 600 children in the Netherlands are diagnosed with cancer. Thanks in part to the research funded by KiKa, 81% of these children now survive the first five years after diagnosis. This is a significant improvement compared to around 72% two decades ago, providing clear evidence that research truly makes a difference, bringing us closer to a 100% chance of recovery.
The research supported by KiKa focuses on various themes, including the development of better medications, reducing pain during treatments, increasing the chances of recovery, and improving the overall quality of life for patients, even after treatment. KiKa also plays a crucial role in educating the public about childhood cancer. It is the only charity in the Netherlands that specifically invests in research addressing all forms of childhood cancer.
All of this impactful work is made possible through the support of individual donors, individuals organizing fundraising events, companies, and foundations.
